ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Be here now. Those words compell my approach to life. They suggest that to be fully alive, be aware of what you sense-what you touch, hear, smell, taste and feel while breathing deep into an open heart and mind.

That’s what I use to see the world around me as a photographer. I slow down to notice, to feel, then to create. My camera is both my companion and a tool as I explore. What do you think Eric Clapton thinks about his guitar or Elton about his piano? There are few days that go by that I don’t pick up my camera to discover what sings to me.

My images arise from a fascination with nature, with the grand landscape and the interior of a drop of water, with lines of dunes and the fluid forms of water, with the capacity of my gear to freeze a hummingbird in flight and to allow water to appear as silk. Often an abstract of tone, line and form is revealed with or without color.

Sharing my photos is interesting for whatever the reactions may be. Sure, it’s rewarding when someone feels something powerful and looks long at an image. When they offer a critique or are blasé, that’s of interest too. I welcome the dialogue, I want to know how viewers feel, what they think. Relating to another person through an image is an opportunity to know them, myself and my image better.

Surely one of the more astonishing rewards of art making
comes when people make time to visit the world you have created.
